Chất lượng của nội soi đại tràng phụ thuộc vào chuẩn bị đại tràng tốt hay không để nhìn rõ bề mặt niêm mạc của toàn bộ đại tràng. Quá trình nội soi đại tràng phụ thuộc vào nhiều yếu tố như: chuẩn bị đại tràng cho bệnh nhân, kinh nghiệm của bác sĩ làm nội soi, máy nội soi và một số yếu tố khác, trong đó yếu tố quan trọng nhất quyết định chất lượng của quy trình nội soi đại tràng là quá trình chuẩn bị đại tràng. Chuẩn bị đại tràng tốt cho phép bác sĩ nội soi tiến hành thủ thuật nhanh chóng, an toàn và quan sát được toàn bộ niêm mạc đại tràng. Chuẩn bị đại tràng liên quan đến tỷ lệ phát hiện polyp và các tổn thương tiền ung thư của đại tràng. Tỷ lệ bỏ sót cao gấp ba lần đối với polyp tuyến có kích thước ≥5 mm khi chuẩn bị đại tràng không tốt. Ngoài ra, chuẩn bị đại tràng không tốt là một trong những yếu tố bất lợi nhất trong các yếu tố dự báo thất bại khi đưa dây nội soi vào manh tràng và gây không hài lòng cho bệnh nhân. Hơn nữa, còn dẫn đến thời gian theo dõi nội soi đại tràng ngắn hơn, thời gian nằm viện lâu hơn và tăng chi phí chăm sóc sức khỏe, và có thể khiến chi phí nội soi đại tràng khi sàng lọc không hiệu quả.
